At Learning and Growing, our teachers implement a program based on the “emergent curriculum”.  By this we mean that the teachers observe and listen to the children during their play.  They are looking for specific areas of interest in which the children might be showing some excitement or curiosity.  From there, the teachers plan activities based on those interests while building on and/or introducing new skills or concepts.  As you can imagine, the children are always more willing to participate in the activities when they revolve around their personal interests.  Therefore, you will notice that every group will be doing different activities based on their interests and their developmental level.

Throughout their program however, you can expect your child to experience a variety of activities.  Possible activities include: cooking and science, creative (arts and crafts), fine motor (beading, lacing), large motor (movement games), cognitive (memory games, concepts), social (sharing, turn-taking, etc.)

We encourage you to discuss your child’s program with their leader at any time.

Our day is structured yet flexible enough to accommodate the daily routines of each individual child.  The following is an outline of a typical day:

7:30 a.m. - Infant room opens

Children and families are greeted and say good-bye.  Some children have their breakfast; others jump right into free play.

9:30 a.m. - Children gather into their groups with their group leader.  Circle time begins.

10:30 a.m. - Groups prepare for time outdoors.  Some groups used our newly renovated outdoor play space, as well we have a variety of parks including Chapman School playground that we use daily.

We also have a variety of outings during the year which may be directly in the community; or we may venture a little farther.  Typically, we have groups that visit the zoo, Assiniboine park, the local library, fire station, local wading pools etc.  All field trips are pre-planned and require parental permission as well as volunteers to ensure the children's safety while away from the centre.

From time to time we also have special visitors who come to the centre.  These people always have something special to share with the children.  Some of the visitors that we have had include:

  • Juno nominated children's singer Aarron Burnett

  • CNIB representative and her Guide Dog

  • Giggles the Clown

Every day is new and exciting with lots of special

events to look forward to!
